Day 7: Money

Today's prompt on the NaPo site is to write a poem about money. This poem came quick and fast - a bit like my ahem, spending of money.

(This was fun to write)

Miser(able)

Imagine spending
your whole life
deficient
in the only currency
that matters.

Instead of a heart
having a hoard
of hundred dollar bills,
never accounting for
real losses - or worse -
gains.

Financially viable
but emotionally bankrupt.
Poor in spirit
with debts of dreams
unpaid.
See how
it taxes your soul,
a mortgaged life.

A penny for your thoughts?
Didn't think so.
Keep the damn change.

  1. This is wonderful! I love the way you've twisted the word 'miser' in the title and bent it into miserable (how have I never noticed the interplay between the two words?! I love the flash of recognition when that happens). You've worked with the prompt beautifully, here. The ideas are all finely wrought, and you've gathered together so many instances of money-related phrases - emotionally bankrupt, debts of dreams, a mortgaged life - which just work wonderfully. I really like this one. Oh, and the closing line is killer :-)

  2. Yep, to be 'miserable' I think you have to have been a miser with something - your time, your energy, your happy thoughts. Generous is the way to do it - good and glad and generous to generate!

This was a quick first draft - I love it when they happen :) Thank you
